  • How often should I fertilise my lawn?

It’s best practice to fertilise your lawn at least twice a year, once in early spring and again in autumn. You should apply a heavy layer of 50 grams per square metre in spring and autumn with lighter levels of around 10 grams per square metre during the summer.

  • How should fertiliser be stored?

Fertiliser products should be stored in a secure location away from pets or children to ensure no accidental contact is made with the fertiliser. Any SSAN fertilisers must be stored in appropriate lockable storage.

Bagged fertiliser should be stored in a dry, well-drained environment with pallets underneath to protect against water damage. Any unused fertiliser should be tightly sealed in lidded containers to prevent any moisture from impacting the product.

Correctly stored unused fertiliser should last between 5 to 10 years depending on the type used and whether it is mixed with any other chemicals such as pesticides.

  • What PPE should I use when working with fertiliser?

When manually handling fertiliser you should wear gardening gloves and protective eyewear. It’s also important to engage in safe moving and handling activities. Spreading fertiliser can be hard yakka, so it’s important to always use correct moving and handling methods, utilising wheelbarrows and other mechanical aids to move heavy loads of fertiliser and bending at the knees when lifting.
